Georgetown College alumnus Donna Cheatham (’67) is hanging up her clipboard and whistle. The three-sport Tiger athlete, who went on to teach and coach in Indiana, announced Monday she is retiring as the most successful girls’ high school basketball coach in the state. She finished her 46-illustratious years with a 730-274 mark. More than 500 of those wins came on the sidelines for Scottsburg High School – a program she helped to start in the early 70s.
A member of the 2002 GC Athletic Hall of Fame Class, Cheatham directed her teams to 21 sectional titles, 11 region titles, two state runner-up finishes and two state titles. Her 1989 and 1990 SHS teams were ranked nationally in the Top 15.
She coached eight Indiana All-Stars and one Miss Basketball (Renee Westmoreland, ’89). Cheatham was also two-time All-Star team coach. Along with her 2002 Tiger athletic induction, she is a 2003 Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame inductee.
While her days on the sidelines are over, she may continue to teach part-time and looks forward to cheering on SHS.
