CLEVELAND – After recording a trio of top-ten finishes at the NAIA winter championships the University of the Cumberlands has climbed to fifth place in the 2019-20 Learfield Directors’ Cup standings after the first round of winter championships. UC has recorded 410 points overall, 275.50 of which came from the winter sports.
Cumberlands’ 275.5 points is the most points from winter sports by any school in the NAIA. The fifth place is the highest UC has been in the standings and it’s the second straight year that the Patriots are inside the top-ten at this point.
The women’s swim team won their sixth-straight MSC championship and finished third at the NAIA national championships to notch 85 points. The Patriots captured three individual NAIA national champions as Mendy De Rooi was named the NAIA Swimmer of the Year.
Men’s wrestling tallied 80 points for their fourth-place finish at nationals. The four-time MSC regular season champions had four wrestlers garner All-American honors. Tres Leon captured the NAIA National Title at the 149 lbs. weight class to cap off his senior season.
Both the men’s and women’s track & field teams placed at nationals to earn points for the Patriots. The women’s team earned 31.5 points for their 41st place finish, while the men’s team finished tied for 60th to earn ten points.
Lindsey Wilson leads the Learfield Directors’ Cup with 559 points, while Indiana Wesleyan and Eastern Oregon are second and third, respectfully. Mid-South Conference schools Life (25th), Cumberland (38th), Campbellsville (48th), and Shawnee State (52nd) are also mentioned in the standings.
The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution finish in the NAIA Championships.
