margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Above Post Ad 2 -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:638px;height:70px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4024319323781499\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"8631827568\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>WPU Athletics<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Wade Steinlage, Assistant Athletic Director for Communications<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1345906564MsoPlainText\"><b><strong>TOPEKA, Kan. &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><\/b>The William Penn women\u2019s bowling team made history by taking the first-ever Heart of America Athletic Conference Championships crown Saturday and Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>WPU qualified second out of six teams with 4,400 pins in 24 Baker games.\u00a0 Mount Mercy earned the top seed with 4,445 pins.<\/p>\n<p>By virtue of being in the top two, the navy and gold earned a bye in the first round.\u00a0 They then advanced easily into the championship round via 4-1 victories over both Baker and Mount Mercy.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the Statesmen were upended by the MMU 4-1 in the first championship match to force an \u2018if necessary\u2019 best-of-seven battle.<\/p>\n<p>WPU rolled out to a 3-1 advantage, but the Mustangs responded to knot the match at 3-3 and push it to a winner-take-all seventh round.\u00a0 The Statesmen came away victorious, however, slipping by 188-187 for the title.<\/p>\n<p>Video of the winning shot can be seen at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/status\/1102356630275047424\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">https:\/\/twitter.com\/i\/status\/1102356630275047424<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv1345906564MsoPlainText\">\nThe conference title is the third for the program and first since winning the Midwest Collegiate Conference crown in 2011-2012.<\/p>\n<p>Team members included <strong>Nicole Craft<\/strong>(Jr., Wakefield, Neb., Physical Education),<strong>Abbey Fangman<\/strong>(So., Waterloo, Iowa, Elementary Education),<strong>Kaylee Gerken<\/strong>(Sr., Dubuque, Iowa, Elementary Education),<strong>Kayla Gifford<\/strong>(Jr., Camanche, Iowa, Biology),<strong>Jaelynn Klein<\/strong>(Fr., Muscatine, Iowa, Communications),<strong>Jade Klinefelter<\/strong>(Cedar Rapids, Iowa),<strong>Nicole Mottier<\/strong>(So., Madison, Wis., Computer Science),<strong>Amber Ovel<\/strong>(Sr., Waterloo, Iowa, Psychology), and<strong>Bailey Palmer<\/strong>(Jr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Biology).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI extremely proud of our ladies, as well as Coach Hoff,\u201d Head Coach Brandon Brooks said.\u00a0 \u201cThey showed grit and class on the lanes this weekend that was unmatched.\u00a0 This team was at one point in last place in qualifying, but had a \u201cno quit\u201d attitude, eventually making a huge run to sneak into second place for qualifying and get the first-round bye.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey bowled excellent on Sunday as well,\u201d Brooks added.\u00a0 \u201cDespite losing the first match to Mount Mercy, they bounced back to take the title.\u00a0 The seniors really stepped up to close the tournament, but it was a whole group effort to capture this one.\u00a0 Everyone stayed positive and continued to make great shots and fill spares all the way to the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Next Up:<\/b>William Penn travels to Dallas, Texas for the USBC Intercollegiate Team and Singles Sectional next Friday through Sunday.<\/p>\n<!--CusAds0-->\n<div style=\"font-size: 0px;
