{"id":567,"date":"2019-01-25T00:06:01","date_gmt":"2019-01-25T05:06:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/kentuckysports.net\/?p=567"},"modified":"2020-11-03T09:01:51","modified_gmt":"2020-11-03T14:01:51","slug":"huge-third-quarter-boosts-statesmen-to-season-sweep-of-vikings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/kentuckysports.net\/?p=567","title":{"rendered":"Huge third quarter boosts Statesmen to season sweep of Vikings"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"13c398acb195b4bd84e993cb56669758\" data-index=\"6\" style=\"float: none; margin:10px 0 10px 0; text-align:center;\">\n<script async src=\"\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- Above Post Ad 2 -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:inline-block;width:638px;height:70px\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4024319323781499\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"8631827568\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\n<\/div>\n<p><em>WPU Athletics<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Wade Steinlage, Assistant Athletic Director for Communications<\/em><\/p>\n<p><b><strong>DES MOINES &#8211;\u00a0<\/strong><\/b>The William Penn women\u2019s basketball team blew a tight game wide open with a 26-point third period as it defeated rival Grand View, 66-47, in Heart of America Athletic Conference action Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>No. 19 WPU (19-2, 14-2 Heart) kept pace atop the league standings with MidAmerica Nazarene by outshooting the Vikings (8-13, 6-9 Heart) 46.7 percent-34.8 percent and outrebounding them 30-27.\u00a0 The biggest differences, though, came at both the line as well as in turnovers. \u00a0The visitors were 19-for-22 at the stripe, while GVU was just 7-for-8.\u00a0 Also, the victors converted the home team\u2019s 20 turnovers (13 for WPU) into a 21-3 advantage.<\/p>\n<p>Grand View pulled out to a 15-10 edge after one quarter, but the Statesmen found their collective groove, and behind first-half 14 points from\u00a0<strong>Vashti Nwagbaraocha <\/strong>(Sr., Milwaukee, Wis., Exercise Science), claimed the lead for good at intermission, 29-26.<\/p>\n<p>The navy and gold took the potential nail-biter turned it on its head in the first six minutes of the third period by scoring on six of their first eight possessions&#8211;12 unanswered points total&#8211;to go ahead 41-26.\u00a0 They did not pump the brakes, eventually netting 26 points to only 10 for the Vikings to lead 55-36 entering the final stanza.<\/p>\n<p>The hosts refused to surrender, though, posting their own 11-1 run over the initial four minutes of the last period to make it a 56-47 contest.\u00a0 Fortunately, the Statesmen regrouped and tallied 10 quick points (the final 10 points of the night, in fact) in the ensuing two-plus minutes and cruised to the victory.<\/p>\n<p>Nwagbaraocha narrowly missed a double-double for the victors, leading all players in points with 26 and rebounds with nine.\u00a0 The senior was 9-for-15 from the field and 8-for-9 at the stripe.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brenda Pennington\u00a0<\/strong>(Jr., Hammond, Ind., Psychology) did most of her scoring from the line (9-for-11) en route to 15 points, while<strong>Makenzie Pezley <\/strong>(So., Keokuk, Iowa, Elementary Education) was in double digits as well with 12 points off the bench.\u00a0 Pennington did much more than just put the ball in the hoop, also assisting on four buckets and recording a quintet of thefts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Kate Ylitalo<\/strong>\u00a0(Jr., Maple Plain, Minn. Biology) also contributed eight points in the victory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe gave great effort all game,\u201d Head Coach\u00a0Steve Williamson\u00a0said.\u00a0 \u201cEveryone who played contributed and played hard tonight.\u00a0 \u201cWe had great energy on our bench throughout.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>William Penn travels to Peru, Neb.
